Feb 28 - Do You Love It Here?

Casual conversations recently have caused me to ponder the success of the Love It Here Campaign and what effect it has had on Whangarei and its residents.

Years ago Whangarei was a major shipping refit and repair centre which was even seen as a kind of stigma, but the industry is now noticeably diminished. Whangarei was also a busy farming capital but that industry has devolved to rural locations closer to the farms it services. We were also the main commercial centre for Northland but this too is slowly diminishing and appears to be moving to smaller centres such as Kaikohe and Kaitaia.

Much has been made in the media recently of the level of violence, high burglary rates, and the problems associated with P use in and around our city, with an attendant suggestion of compromised public safety.

I’m curious as to how you feel about Whangarei.  Do you feel connected to it as a District? Do you feel safe here? Do you Love It Here?

I’d be grateful if you’d take a moment to consider these questions and let me know.
