August 9 - Unity: Do we have it in our local governing bodies?
It was really great to hear over the weekend International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach appeal for unity within the world. It got me thinking about our local body aspiring politicians.
Mr Bach said “We are living in a world of crises, mistrust and uncertainty.” His speech was directed at terrorism and world leaders.
Rio de Janeiro is not without its troubles or disruptions, however the Olympic officials want to make it a safe place for all athletes, a place so safe it transcends religion, race and community beliefs.
Is our own Whangarei local council as focused and motivated as this? From the infighting, bad behaviour and emotions that have been unleashed upon us during these last three years, it can be understood why central government is trying to encourage new people to stand for office.
A persistent problem is our region is not considered for a lot of large scale developments. Despite Northland having the best deep water sea port in NZ, Ports of Auckland are considering other ports to use for their shipping. While other areas of NZ get money thrown at their roads, Northland roads fall apart and we use what is left in the bottom of the bucket, hoping to make it stretch to cover everything. While other areas get given opportunities Northland keeps working to make itself better.
The farmers are fed up, the business people are fed up, and the community is wearied out by all this infighting. If only there was a team that could bring the community and businesses together so that Northland can be strong again.
Local body elections are coming this October and I look forward to the impact of fresh personalities on our local government.
